Doorbell Training

Lonnie, yes, we trained him to place first. We lured him to his rug with a treat several times, treating when he stepped on rug. Then we named the behavior "place", then we added the doorbell, doorbell rings, murph place...... This took many many repetitions over several weeks. We were constantly asking people to come ring our bell. He had a solid stay before we started which is very important. We wanted him to be able to see us and the door from his place. Wilson is not doorbell trained yet although he will hold a sit stay for me when someone is at the door most of the time. Murph's doorbell training is solid even when Wilson is acting crazy. It is not hard if you break it into small pieces, go slow and do lots of repetitions! You can do it too!

Ronna, that is amazing and what a good little boy.  When you first started did you put him on the "place" and keep giving him treats or did he start at the door and you took him over to his place with a treat.  The "place' is in eye shot of the door, right?  I am sure that is important.  OMD that is just great and I loved his little expression on his face while the person was coming in!  Thanks so much for posting this!

Thanks Roy.  It takes a lot of practice but is well worth it.  Unfortunately....our youngest doodle isn't doorbell trained yet.  Everything gets harder when the second comes along..LOL.
