A place to learn tricks and maybe brag a bit! The goal is to have fun AND build the foundation of a good family pet by shaping fun behaviors which is also the foundation to do dog sports like agility.
I give my dog both vaccines and of course treat for heartworm. My vet has had dogs die of lepto. It is a vey dangerous disease and I think the benefits greatly outweigh the risks.
Your vet will know, but there are maps you find on-line that show the areas with the heaviest infestations. IThere's one here on DK somewhere, I'll try to find it.
It may also be important to know that leptospirosis is zoonotic, which means it can be transmitted to humans from dogs; and it's not easily recognized or diagnosed.
My vet did not recommend Lepto because the normal risks that eveyone is mentioning are lacking with Tucker and it is not know to be in our area. As Karen mentioned- if it is endemic in your area- it would likely be important to get - so again talk w…
Thank you for your comments. I guess I wasn't very clear when I asked the question. I had received a reminder from my vet stating the three things Morgan was up for this year, the two vaccines and the bloodwork for heartworm. I guess I was in doubt…
Last year, for the first time in many many years, my regular vets handed out literature and spoke to each patient, encouraging them to have their dogs vaccinated against leptospirosis. The reason for this was that whereas they had rarely seen one ca…
I was given literature saying that the newer lepto vaccines are much safer and have fewer side-effects than the older ones used to have. I've still hesitated about giving it to Jack, though.
I was at a breeders conference a few years ago and the speaker (vet specialist) said he wouldn't give lepto unless you are in a high risk area such as deep woods and/or lots standing water. I know your dog is older but he said to never give Lepto to…
I just deleted my original reply because I was guilty of not carefully reading the question. The titers I mentioned are for things like corona virus, parvo, and distemper, not bordatella, lepto, or heartworm.
I agree with Adina. Heartworm preventati…
Hi Toni, thanks for the note - it's great to hear from another Downers doodle owner! Bentley's still finishing up his shots, so we haven't taken him out much beyond our backyard yet. Once he's ready, we'd love to get him out to meet other people and dogs!
Hi Toni - Our 1-year-old goldendoodle "Dodger" loves to play with another BIG dog any chance he gets! We are in Hinsdale, really close to Hanson Center. Is it ok to take dogs there? I have a preschooler, kindergartener, and a first grader, so my time is pretty tight. Mornings are good for me - Tues/Thurs are best. There's also Mayslake in Oak Brook - I've never been there because I thought I wouldn't be able to go often enough to make it worth paying the yearly fee. Let me know if you'd like to get the dogs together! -Kate
