Side Effects of Cyclosporine (aka Atopica)

Hi everyone, My dog suffers from mild allergies, and our vet recommended that he take cyclosporine (or Atopica). My dog took this medication for about 1 year, and a year later, developed oral melanoma. I have read countless articles regarding the relationship between cyclosporine and cancer. Cyclosporine is an imuno-suppressant, and is used for to treat people who have undergone organ transplants. Has anyone else treated their dog with cyclosporine and later found that their dog developed…See More

Just catching up - Boomer is doing well.  He had his first vaccine and is scheduled for his next vaccine on next Tuesday.  Thank you for getting back to me.  Let's hope the vaccine works for both of our boys.

I had a notice of a message at DK on my e-mail but could not find your message here on DK.  Do you want to be friends and then we can send private messages in our inboxes?  Anyway, I think you wanted to know more about my dogs illnesses.  Hondo was my best labradoodle and he died at 7 years old of liver disease.  He had two surgeries and was on human liver meds for two years and special diet.  He could have no processed foods, so I cooked for him.  Groucho Too was my goldendoodle and he died of cancer at 8 years old.  He had a bleed out and a spleenectomy.  From that they determined he had cancer of the gall bladder.  They said it would be about three months and I did not get any other treatment for him.  You can see them on the photos on my page.

Welcome to DoodleKisses, the best website around for doodle lovers everywhere.  I saw your note on a discussion about early spay and neuter, so it seems to be along another line.  I doubt it has anything to do with the kennels since it has been so long that you have had them.  I have had two wonderful doodles die early, one of liver disease and the other of cancer, and they were from kennels on opposite ends of the country.  The food we feed our dogs, treats and toys we give them, inoculations and meds we give them all would have more influence.  I have always neutered early, and I will not do that with my next dog, but I think that has more to do with bone formation than illness.  If they always have been healthy and active, then you have had a good life with them, and they have had a good life with you.
