"Guarding leads to aggression in a lot of cases, so if she learns this at her current age it might be hard to conquer later. Try doing the exchange for treats at home for a week every day, then start doing it in the park or with otehr…"
"I think you should ask the training group here on DK. There are more experienced folks in that group and it is all about training. No disrespect to all of us who have puppies....just figure those who run the training group will know more…"
"Yeah, I figured I would just monitor it and then see--the trainer is the one who made me feel paranoid about it. She once saw Elly growl and then she took away the toy from her and gave her a treat; that was all. When I told her it happened a couple…"
"Well it only becomes an issue if the growling turns into aggression. Finn plays with an adult dog who growls at him the same way but he is all bark no bite. He also gets into pretty aggressive play fight sessions with his buddy where…"
Elly is 4 and a half months now. She knows her basic commands but I enrolled her in puppy classes cause there's always a lot more that we can learn. She also does puppy play dates with this trainer and I bring her to the dog park a lot to get the socialization she needs.Recently, I noticed that she has started to get possessive with certain toys-- they don't have to be hers per say,(this happened at a friends house and at puppy play date and they were not Elly's toys) but once she has her hands…See More
"The continuation of keeping the dog comfortable in a crate is also so very important when a dog has to be kept at the vets, surgeries, and grooming. Because Cassie was never crated, it was very stressful for her during so many of her medical…"
"Keeping the crate as a safe haven is so useful especially later on. I leave the door open and Riley goes in and out of it all day. If I want to close the door (for example) if we have people going in and out of the house and the front…"
"I gate Finn in the bathroom and crate at times. Couples things. 1) Could be a good idea to crate at times (couple hours here and there) so that Elly is used to it in case you ever in a pinch need to use a crate. Like car…"
"I was originally going to crate Boone at night in my bedroom but the crate I borrowed for this was too small for him. I do have a bigger crate in the family room where I crate him during the day when I'm at work. I couldn't see…"
"Thanks Diana and Vivian!!!! Both of your doodles are just so cute. Elly has been so much fun :) I can't imagine life without her now!! She is like a big teddy bear.
Diana--I just read that your puppy is 9 weeks and 20 lbs!!!!!!!!!!!…"
"Blossom is 7 months old and only slept in the crate at night for the first month. After that I closed her in the bedroom for about a month and every since she has slept wherever she pleases at night. She's never been one for sleeping in bed…"
"Daphne is no longer in a crate. She is 7 1/2 months old and she was about 4 months old when she just didn't want to go in it at night. So we tried letting her sleep in our bed with the bedroom door closed (so she cant wander the house) and she…"
Yes, puppyhood can drive you crazy! Good thing they are just so darn cute! LOL Charlie is now 1 yr 8 mos and 39 lbs. He is considered a medium ALD. We recently put a deposit down on another litter which was born 8/5/12, so he may be getting a brother or sister. The father of the litter is also Charlie's sire, so I guess that would make them half-siblings. I am a little apprehensive about it as we have never had two dogs at one time. Charlie is very laid back and just loves people so I hope this will be a good thing for him too!
Enjoy your "little" doodle. I think she is going to be a big beautiful girl!
