How to tell if a dog is dominant, and what to do about it?

I've been told by the trainer at Belle's day care farm that she is a dominant dog.  What are the characteristics of a dominant dog? Can anxiety be a factor, or an alternative cause of dominant…Continue

Belle Wins Over an Inveterate Dog Disdainer

My mother has never enjoyed dogs.  She also has never understood why any sane person would want a canine companion.  Years ago when my then partner gave me an adorable puppy for Valentine's Day, my Mom's response was "are you going to keep her?"  (Actually the dog stayed around much longer than that partner.)  So I gave up long ago showing my Mom cute pictures, and telling her funny anecdotes, about the many wonderful dogs who have graced my life. Then Mom, who is 103, fell and broke her hip…See More

Would it be foolish to adopt a rescue with Cushing's Disease?

My 14-year-old. IBD terrier, my sweet Funny Honey Bunny, died while sleeping in my arms a few months ago, and I have recently started looking for a rescue to adopt who would be a good companion to mini labradoodle Belle.  Because Belle is so small (not quite 15 pounds), and because I no longer want to have a dog that I can't pick up and put in the car if the dog is sick or injured (bad experience with a 64 pound lab with heart disease), I am hoping to find a small poodle mix. I may have the…See More

About Me:
PitaPata - Personal picturePitaPata Dog tickers

I am a retired, widowed empty-nester currently living with Belle, an adorable, feisty doodle puppy, and Honey, a 12-year-old silky terrier and cats Sophie and Roxie.
What Type of Doodle(s) do you have? What are their names? Tell us about your doodle(s) or any other pets you have!
Labradoodle Belle came home on August 8, 2015, and she is so lovable. She is an apricot mini with a liver nose and beautiful green eyes. She has been enjoying puppy socials and the occasional visit to doggy day care, and she starts puppy training class on October 10th.

Tracking Belle's Weight:

August 8, 2015 - 4.18 lbs
August 26, 2015 - 5 lbs
September 12, 2015 - 6.3 lbs
September 16, 2015 - 7.2 lbs
October 4, 2015 - 8 lbs
November 7, 2015 - 12.6 lbs
November 28, 2015 - 13.2 lbs
December 30, 2015 - 13.7 lbs
Where did you get your doodle(s)?
Breeder
Why did you choose a doodle rather than another breed or mix?
I was hoping for a relatively small dog with a lab's mellow and friendly personality but less copious shedding. So far, I think I have hit the jackpot with Belle.
What are Your Favorite Things to Do With Your Doodles?
We are having fun running around the back yard with me yelling "leave it" and "no sticks." I also enjoy training with Belle, who has begun to understand "better hurry pee, "better hurry poop," "sit" (with pointed finger), and sometimes "no cats." We're going to start on "down" soon.
Does your doodle(s) shed?
Nope!
Who grooms your doodle(s)?
me
Relationship Status:
Single

Do doodles have a sense of humor?

Posted on May 10, 2016 at 1:20pm 7 Comments

I have suspected for a while that despite all my efforts (a la Doggy Dan) to establish myself as the leader of the pack, Belle has concluded that I am here for her entertainment.  I carefully refrain from playing with her if she brings me a toy to start her favorite game of fetch, as only I am supposed to initiate play. That doesn't stop her from constantly bringing me a variety of toys she hopes I will throw.  One day, I was standing by a counter folding laundry and suddenly a soggy tennis…

Belle Makes Progress at Day Care

Posted on April 3, 2016 at 12:14pm 8 Comments

I wrote a while ago about Belle (14.8 lbs) failing the admission evaluation at doggy day care because she didn't know how to behave with other, mostly bigger, dogs.  The owner of a small local day care on a farm agreed to work with Belle (whom she refers to fondly as her "wackadoodle"). Belle started playing under close supervision with a few calm, small dogs. Gradually she was allowed to run and play (mostly run) with a variety of larger, but trustworthy, dogs.   Belle wants to show you…

A tale of unintended consequences.

Posted on December 4, 2015 at 6:28pm 10 Comments

I just got home from the emergency vet. The trainer from Belle's doggy day care suggested that I try the Pet Corrector when Belle jumps on my back after being stopped once with a firm "no."  She has gotten much better about that, but in exchange she has resumed chewing on the wooden rungs of my computer chair.  She never minded the bitter apple, and has gotten used to the horseradish solution (although she prefers it with gefilte fish).  Time outs make no impression on her when she wants to…

Hi Andrea--if you have questions, you can send them to me now. I will try to help--I assume this is Belle that is the guardian dog? And that she will go to the breeder to have the litter?

Hi Andrea - Thanks for your generous offer to send the unused meds.  I can certainly use the Vetmed and Silex for Roo.  I am so sorry that you had the opportunity to have to have these on hand.  It's so hard..!

It's sounds like you are having a good time with Bella and so is she.

My address is 31 Hidden Valley Road, Monrovia CA 91016.  Please let me know the shipping cost and your address and I will send you a check.

Nice to have you as a friend on DK

I love my camera! Cameras take such better pictures - inconvenient in that you have to actually carry them with you though if you want to take a picture.  I finally got a smart phone but it takes such crummy pictures :-{.

8 pounds it so tiny!  The smaller they are, the sooner they are done growing.  Ned grew very little past 6 months and was done by 8 months, and he is 28 pounds - technically a mini but huge compare to Belle.  She is so cute.  I love her coloring, especially her eyes.
