Bernadette is a Maltese cross whom we rescued from the Devore, California Shelter with her litter of five puppies. We think that the pups may have a Llasa Apso or some such breed as their father. We named the mom, Bernadette, since the shelter belonged to San Bernardino County.
I am going to shoot some more shots of the pups and of Bernadette today. She was a total, filthy mess when we got her but, after multiple baths looks better now! The pups have just opened their eyes within the last couple of days. This usually happens with Maltese and Maltese cross puppies at about two weeks. We guestimate that the pups are about 16-days or so old. Bernadette and her family have been with us about nine of so days. The pups are very cute and Bernadette is extremely loving but, very protective over her puppies. She grugingly allows Judy and me to handle her puppies but, will not allow anyone else near them.
Holly takes the opportunity to interact with the puppies whenever the mom is out to go potty. You will see Holly hesitate to make sure Bernadette is not in the pen with the pups and then Holly will make a beeline to them. As soon as Bernadette weans the puppies, Holly will take over full time nurturing and will spend hous next to the puppy pen licking the pups through the grating...
