WELCOME TO THE FOOD GROUP - This group was started in an attempt to present well-researched and FACT-based information on the amazingly complicated and confusing issue of feeding our dogs. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.
WE ASK THAT YOU NOT POST ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS FOR WHICH YOU RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF COMMISSION OR COMPENSATION. THANK YOU.
IMPORTANT-PLEASE READ "FOOD GROUP GUIDELINES" BEFORE STARTING A NEW DISCUSSION.

Hello food groupers...Tacky had his kidney blood panel done on Saturday and everything is back on track!  His meds have been adjusted and must be working.  AND HE GAINED 6 OZ in 3 MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  That's not a lot for a dood, but for a chihuahua with kidney disease, heck yeah.  I am pleased as can be.  We get a 6 mo. pass for now....

Got this short article today on picky eaters.  It echoes the experience and wisdom that has been expressed in this group over the years.  http://earthrated.com/blog/is-your-dog-a-finicky-eater/

I know it is hard to know what to use as a back up.. We are on Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance LID and I have yet to find a good back up...hopefully I won't need to....

I know in California, we weren't directly involved in the recall so perhaps I have nothing to add to this but  my opinion. We have continued to feed out dogs TOTW because they do well on it and it is more reasonably priced.  I know it is recommended to have a back up brand, but the recall really brought home to me that unless you actually know which brands are manufactured where, your back up could also be involved in the same recall.

Comment by Karen & Jackdoodle on July 6, 2012 at 7:28am

Lindsey, I really do think you are fine with TOTW for now. If anything, these recalls are either going to make them look for another manufacturing facility or read the riot act to Diamond.

Comment by Lindsey & Cocoa on July 6, 2012 at 5:59am

Yep and after last night 1st night back on TOTW we had a clean cage :)

I came down every 2 hours to let her out just in case and nothing.

So I guess totw is what we have to stick with for now.

I do agree they are all different.  Even though both of mine do great on the dog food they eat, Kona can't stomach anything but American rawhide, and Buddy has a hard time digesting bigger chuncks of Himalayan dog chews.  He has thrown them up days after he has eaten them, not Kona.  And Kona chews and chews grass after regular rawhide which I don't buy anymore, but Buddy handles with no problem. Sorry to hear Cocoa had a bad experience with Earthborn:(

Comment by Karen & Jackdoodle on July 5, 2012 at 7:55pm

Okay, let's try this again. Gina, it's so funny that you posted about how well your dogs are doing on the Earthborn, because today, Lindsey posted a new discussion here about Cocoa having explosive diarrhea after a switch to Earthborn from TOTW. They are all so different.
