I also put this post in the grooming group, but thought I would let the S. California group know about this Salon.
I took Bailey to a new groomer yesterday. John Paul Mitchell just opened their first salon in California not far from my house. It's in Laguna Niguel (in case any DK'rs live close). I dropped in 2 days before, and they gave me a tour. The Location is Crown Valley and Greenfield.
It was fantastic! It's an open salon so you can sit and watch your dog get groomed. There is an area that you can sit right in the grooming room and also another behind a window. I chose the window because I thought Bailey could act different if I was there in the room.
They use all Paul Mitchell products for pets, filtered water, and the salon is set up just like a human salon. They have work stations, but instead of chairs they have grooming tables. I like the fact that everything was in the open for all to see.
I left Bailey, but went back early and watched the last half hour of grooming. She came out looking soft and clean. And they cut her exactly like I wanted. In the last half hour they did a lot of trimming and shaping.
They brushed her teeth, did her anals, filed her nails, oatmeal shampoo and conditioner, and cleaned her ears. I had a discussion with the groomer about the ears and why they prefer plucking. They told me that some dogs have lots of long hairs in their ears. Many dogs ear hair will keep growing and wrapping inside the canal. If they don't pluck, the air will not be able to keep the canal dry and hence an infection.
When she got groomed yesterday they also cut the hair under the ear flap and inside the ear.
The cost is the same as what I paid the groomer to come to my house, but the quality of the cut is no comparison. The manager told me that in California anyone can groom dogs without any education. I was shocked at that. They hire very qualified people.
I'm glad they opened, and Bailey will be able to get groomed properly. And, she behaved nicely.
