Thanks for the additional information. It may take her some time as you cannot tell what she has been through or what training she has had. I would suggest taking her out to the area where you want her to go pee each time she goes outside and say "Go pee". She will learn to associate the words with her actions and she will eventually go on command. I also recommend that you always take her out to your preferred pee area before going to the park (either walking or in the car) and tell her to go pee. I always do that with my dogs before they get in the car and they love to pee and then go for a ride. When she is trained to pee on command, then she should be fine on the carpets.

Gabby was picked up by Animal Control wandering the hot hot streets of Phoenix. She was rescued by Arizona Poodle Rescue at the exact time I was looking to adopt dog number two into my home. She appears to be about 9 or 10 months old. She weighed 40 pounds when I got her but now (4 weeks later) weighs 50.

Poor thing had been clipped very short (probably covered with mats), was parasite infested and just stunk to high heaven. Her face was scabby and scarred and her poor feet were blistered.

She was so terrified of everything that when they leashed her to take her out to my car, she just rolled over and peed. After dragging her outside, she absolutely refused to get near the car and I had to pick her up and manually stuff her in.

It took days before she would really allow herself to be touched. She always seems to want to be friendly, reaching out with tail wagging for a good sniff, but then just darts away if you put out a hand.

Almost every moring we go to the local dog park and she is now joyfully climbing in and out of the car all by herself. She likes a good long combing in the morning and I have finally got her acclimated enough to the grinder that I have trimmed all her nails.

She is a puppy so she digs and she chews. I try to watch her all the time but of course that's just impossible. I have severly limited her access to carpeted areas. She's never allowed in until I know she's peed...and a little sqirt doesn't count. And then I watch her like a hawk. If I think I'm going to get distracted with something else, back to the kitchen she goes. I guess the problem is knowing when it will be safe for her on the carpet. Because she isn't allowed there when there is any possibility of needing to pee, she never has to go to the door to let me know she needs to go out. And I can always count on her to do that when she's on the linoleum, so that's not a very good indicator of progress.

Labs are so smart and very sensitive, so there is definitely hope for her. You didn't say how old, but I would guess nobody house trained her. It's good that she will not go on the linoleum floor and barks at the door when she wants out. I would keep her in that area whenever she is unsupervised. I never allowed my pups in the house unsupervised until they were house trained. They had baby playpens they used as beds and for unsupervised time. They never had accidents in the playpens and I would take them outside to their potty area as soon as they were taken out of the playpen and first thing in the morning when they woke up. They would stay there until they did their duty, and then they were rewarded and brought into the house for supervised time. Free time and play time was supervised or outside. We have never had accidents except when Hondo was sick. When he was on steroids he had to wear diapers when he was indoors. Well, that is my advice.

Hi - New Fosterer of a badly neglected (maltreated?) lab mix. Gabby is very sweet but just doesn't trust anybody. She really only knows NO. When she is confined to the kitchen (linoleum floor), she will whine or give a short bark at the door when she needs to go out. If she has access to the carpeted areas, she will go there instead. Any advice?

I'm sure he will have gained some (probably more than 1/2 pound). How's his tummy? I love puppy's little round tummies.

Mickey is making progress by the hour. He is eating like a little piggy - on Tuesday the vet told me he has gained a 1/2 lb in just 5 days!! He is going back tomorrow for a recheck of the kennel cough - I hope he gained some more.

I 'm not a foster either... But I would like to be one day.... So, I want to educate myself by being a part of this group.
