Hi. New to this group so I don't know if I'm being redundant in asking if you all have a tried & true way to prevent mats on your doodles. Axl has been groomed once at the beginning of the summer…Continue

Comment by Rebecca Brooks on April 27, 2013 at 8:21pm Roxy has shaggy long curls I wouldn't think of cutting. I think this summer we will buy her a swimming pool to stay cool. Any other ideas on how to keep them from over heating in a warm climate?
Comment by Debi and Monty Moose on March 27, 2013 at 6:21am The shaggy look is what I fell in love with and would not even think of shaving Monty. The only things that I trim are his feet and the "v" between his eyes...so he can see. Monty is almost 7 months old and his hair is really starting to get some length to it and is sooo soft and barely sheds. He has a coat that doesn't mat at all, so grooming is very easy....so far. We'll see what happens when he swims alot this summer, but so far.....no plans to ever take him to a groomer. I am afraid that he would look like a poodle when they were finished with him.
Comment by LeAnn & Loki Doodle on March 26, 2013 at 8:14pm I also love the shaggy look! Dont plan to ever shave my doodle. Loki's coat is a little wiry so shouldnt have trouble with matting. He is 7 months old and continues to get more and more soft curls....I am patiently waiting for his facial hair to grow...I want the shaggy look!!!
Comment by Gwyndolyn Morasko on March 25, 2013 at 1:59pm Good to find this group. I was starting to wonder why so many doodle owners shave their dogs, and feeling like the "outsider" that I like my messy scraggly muppet puppy! I took Kona in for a free bath at Pet Smart, and when I picked him up, they had completely shaved his bridge and nose. It is two months later, and he is just BARELY starting to look like a doodle to me. I hope it gets long again on the top of his nose! I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever grow back to the funny 2 inch long waves on the snout.
I have a confession to make. I have trimmed Neely down significantly for this Christmas Season. I have had a right hand infection that has left me without full use of the right hand and it is also weak and painful. Neely was really matted around his neck especially after having his friends chew and slobber all over him and it took me and my husband along time to brush and blow dry. I decided that since we were having three other dogs over for Christmas break he was going to be a mess after a two week stint! So I took advantage of his fresh grooming to trim him down. I am not so sure I like it but he is getting alot of compliments. Look at my recent pictures and see what you think. I tell you so far he is covered in slobber and looks like a drowned rat as he lets the other dogs ( only year old pups) bite and pull on him to no end. I think I made the right choice.
Comment by Bryce P on August 11, 2011 at 6:13pm Thanks Myla, But sometimes it can be a real pain, Like during bath/brushing time, swimming, and exercising in the hot weather.
Yours truly,
Huff

The shaggy hair is also one of the reasons we picked a doodle too (the other reason was because of their temperament and their playfulness. I enjoy bathing and brushing Huff too.
Becky and Murphy-
You are welcome:) As long as you keep up I think he should be fine but a lot of doodle owners say that they mat overnight. Huff never really got matted like that. We never had to shave him down. I am not an expert on the puppy coat change because I don't remember Huff having such a major change in his coat but it could be because my dad used a zoom groom rubber brush on him and pretty much got rid of all the shedding hair that would have otherwise matted. He looked pretty scruffy between 4 yup until 6 months. I think that time must have been his coat change.
