Karina,  Alma also has a similar condition on her paws.  We have been treating her seasonally as it usually gets worse during the spring.  What brand of food are you feeding Floyd?  Have you tried any foot/paw baths?

Karina, thank you for this hopeful post about Floyd!!! So happy he's improving.
Comment by Karina, Wass and Floyd yesterday

Hello all,

It's been a little while since I've been on doodle kisses and actually came on to wish all the Anja/Casey 5/20/10 kids a Happy Birthday. I started reading some of the other comments over the last couple of months about Cooper and I'm so sorry to hear this news. Floyd has not had any seizures but he has been dealing with allergies, chewing his feet, legs and tail and through our massive search to help him we were given information to a Pet Nutritionist and it has been life changing. It turns out that on top of Floyd's allergies he had a serious fungal overgrowth called Malaseezia which caused dark burgundy red fur on the bottom of his paws.

We have had to change his diet completely to kill the fungus, so no food or treats that has sugar which would feed the fungus further. So no root vegetables like potatoes or carrots, no cookies of any kind, no beans of any kind. We also can't bathe him with any products that have oatmeal because that spreads the fungus which was already on his skin. We were actually spreading the problem by using the oatmeal shampoos which were suggested by all of our vets, animal dermatologists etc. It's been a frustrating situation but Floyd is so much better. He still deals with seasonal allergies but his itching is nothing like it was last year. He is SO much better and we saw a difference the very first night on the new food. It has been a long, difficult and frustrating road to get the right information about this condition. Keep looking because there are answers out there that we don't even realize are out there!

Again, I am so sorry to hear about Cooper.  I just know how hard this must be for you, as it has been for Debbie! She will be a good support for you, I'm sure!  Kachi (Tula/Micah '08) has had a terrible time with allergies, but we have finally been able to get them under control with a limited ingredient diet, and some recent changes to his omega 6 - omega 3 ratios (He takes supplements).

Michelle, don't worry! I promise, you will be so happy with your doodle! Just look how crazy we all are about ours!!!!

I am so sorry to hear about Cooper and Toby! We have 2 doodles, both are from Anja/Casey litters. Sully is 3 and Gus is 1 and both have been on Trifexis for a year now with no issues. No allergies either, but they do have sensitive stomaches. Both eat Orijin and their treats are Zukes mini's, dehydrated chicken or cut up apples and carrots. Michelle, I wish you the best of luck with your new doodle! We couldn't be happier with ours!

We also try to avoid wheat, we stick to limited ingredients and grain free....we found by limiting grains as much as possible we greatly reduced his symptoms....
Comment by Sandi & Kia on April 10, 2013 at 6:58pm

Yes, Kia often squats and lifts one of her legs slightly... but only when we're out, not at home. Go figure?

As for allergies, several times Kia rubbed the sides of her nose/mouth on grassy area or the lawn. Our Vet told us that it may be an indication of an allergy. He asked what kinds of food and treats we gave her, to watch and be conscious of when she rubs her face. Not scientifically researched, but it appeared to me that she would do that when she's had treats that have wheat.Other people, and many shop owners, give treats that contain wheat. Vet advised that we should not give her all kinds of treat, just stick to the ones she is used to. So now, we only allow her treats without wheat. We bring her own supply of treats, and if someone wants to give her a treat with wheat, we just offer them what we have so they can give Kia a treat. We also use Orijen grain free. Every once in awhile, when we forget and allow someone to give her a treat with wheat, she occasionally would rub her face. Don't think this is only among doodles. Several of our friends who have other dog breeds also have dogs who are allergic to wheat.

Toby (Tula/Micah) has a sensitive stomach so we give him Natural Balance LID (limited ingredients diet) "Potato and Duck" or "Potato and Bison" and he does really well on these. On occasion when he gets an upset stomach, I give him a 10mg Pepsid (Famotidine) tablet, per our vet's instructions, and it calms his stomach right down. He has no problem with allergies.

Toby also has allergies, gets inflammation of the ears and chews his paws.  We now have him on a very simple restricted diet, only gets Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Bison kibble, treats are also Natural Balance.  We found that every time he gets a bite of boiled chicken, hard boiled egg, cheese or rice he starts chewing his paws.So for special treats we just use a bite of peeled apple, mini carrot or frozen green bean, which he loves all three and has no issues with them. . and no paw chewing...

lol...I think Kia lifts her leg slightly too!!! Sandi, am i right?:)

My dogs are both on Trifexis and we've had no problems. They've been on it for over a year now. Izzy seems to be allergic to fleas and the Trifexis works really well. Lucca hates the taste but I camouflage it with the pill pockets.

They get "itchies" periodically but nothing major. Both are on Orijen grain free.

Michelle...your worries are justified. It's just like being pregnant with a human babe. You worry all the time but once they pop out worries fly out the window once you hold them in your arms.....until they're teens....lol
