Where Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Owners Connect!

At our vet's request, we decided to breed Caeleach and Seamus. We were going to have both fixed, but our vet wanted a puppy, from our dogs, and their ARE no F1b Labradoodles in all of Western NC. The only one we've seen was the rescue in Waynesville.

Anyway, we think the breeding took. Now, just about everyone we know harps on the number of puppies, in rescue. yes, I know that!

However, we have more people that want our puppies than there will be puppies. The vet said that Caeleach' and Seamus are wonderfully healthy and have terrific temperements, so he wanted to buy a puppy, from us. I couldn't think of a better recommendation, for breeding.

Our contract will have a "take back" option. If the people do not want the dog, at any time, I will gladly take it back. Also, we will require that all of our families take their puppies to obedience.

Just wanted to vent. I am a firm believer in spay/neuter and don't need the lectures!

Hi Gail...I'm not going to reprimand you...but I will say that I question the integrity of a vet who asks his clients to breed their dogs for his own personal benefit..........I'm sorry but it is COMPLETELY unethical....

I have never heard of a vet, urging clients to breed their dogs. What genetic testing has been done on your two doodles?
I am not picking on you, but, I wonder what is going on in your vet's head. He of all people should know about genetic testing, and all the pit falls, and problems.

Is he going to do early spays and neuters ????

Gail, what does the vet say about Caeleach's history of skin problems?

Reply to This

I asked him about that problem and he thinks that is might have been a mold problem. We also had allergy problems and traced it down to black mold on firewood..

She has been itch free for over 120 days and she has even had a few flea bites (in Texas). We will never know what caused the problem.

I know that Seamus' parents have cleared on hips and eyes, I am waiting for the complete vet report on his parents. It is Caeleach that I have the most concern about.

I also forgot to add that we want all puppies spayed and neutered.

If the breeding didn't take, I will most likely just go ahead and have them both fixed.

We have referred people to breeders, out of state, but we get, "We want one of Caeleach's and Seamus' puppies.

What can I say, it was a moment of temporary insanity.

Please excuse my butting in as this is none of my business but, out of curiosity, I cannot help but ask what you might do with the puppies that no one buys. Our Phoebe is one of ten puppies and I know that people say a lot of things that, for whatever the reason, they might not be able to follow through with--like the purchase of a puppy. Should you have a large litter or simply pups that do not sell quickly, is your vet willing to assist you in defraying the costs of raising these puppies until you find them good homes?

Gail -

If you didn't think you made a mistake you wouldn't have posted. I do want to make clear that your breeding these dogs DOES contribute to the problem. How can you breed a dog that was resued from a puppy mill?

Perhaps you are the perfect example of someone who says "It's not my fault".

I do think that what you are doing is irresponsible and it is not to be condoned no matter how good your intentions are.

The tone of this "discussion" is disturbing. I thought this was a board where different philosophies were welcomed and debated respectfully? I would hate for important issues not to get raised and debated because people start to fear their positions will be attacked

I don't see where anything is "disturbing" or anyone is being attacked. People are asking questions or expressing opinions...isn't that what debating an issue means? It would be really hard to "debate" an "important issue" without anyone disagreeing with someone else, and stating the reasons why.

I agree. I think so far this discussion has strong opinions, but nobody has been attacking as much as stating their position.

Gail,
I won't address your personal decision to bring more pups into this world, however I REALLY have a problem with your vet encouraging his patient's family to breed the dog, when they originally intended to neuter the dogs. Just so HE can have one of the puppies. We really don't want to carry on the genes of puppy mill dogs. I think the Vet's behavior is unethical. Shame on him, he of all people should know of the burden of too many unwanted dogs, and the high rate of euthanization in the shelters, especially down south.

Hi everyone

I think we could lighten up here a bit. Gail, you seem to be trying to be responsible about the results of this breeding. Hopefully all will go well. I am as aghast at anyone by puppy mills, children selling, and other atrocities human commit motivated by greed. A mutifaceted attack: tough laws, tough enforcement, education, and a good supply of reasonably priced dogs available from responsible breeders will all help. It seems to me that Gail with her history of rescue work knows as well as anyone the problems of unwanted dogs. Gail, I think you told us about this not because you feel guilty, but because this is a community that you wanted to be honest with. What's done is done and you never know what will come of actions. I trust you from your previous history and sharing this story to arrange for the best possible outcome for these puppies. There is always joy in new life, so don't miss the joy. (Odd vet though) Keep us posted.

"there are no F1bs in all of Western NC". Oh my. I am sure the vet can afford the gas to drive out of NC to find a responsible breeder of F1bs that health tests their breeding parents. Do you know anything about the genetics of the parents? Are they carriers for anythiing?

That aside. Now that is going to happen, if you do need advice on whelping boxs, supplies, etc.... feel free to ask. Its the puppies best interests now.
