I'm new to the group and it was suggested i post what we are going through with Lexi.
She is 11 years old and in the last 2-3 years she has started to develop scabbing on her chin area of her beard.

First time we took her to the vet they just thought it was food buildup as we had been giving her some wet food and frosty paws. So we stopped that and hoped it would be the end if that.

Then we tool her this past Feb. as it was back with a vengance!! Very infected. The vet did a biopsy and no cancer Thank God!! She also did ab autoimmune test and nothing there- again TG!

So this time -yesterday- we went and its infected again but not badly.
Vet said it could be food allergies or even seasonal outdoor. In an effort to figure this out the vet took heroff of Beneful sn put her on Royal Canin Hypoallergenic.
Anyone experienced this?

Hi Donna and Welcome!! I am thrilled you took my advice. I am sure you will get tons of advice on helping Lexi.

I recommend you join the Atopic Dermatitis group, which is likely here and the food group. Search the discussions, you'll find a wealth of information.

Since the vet saw  her, I am sure this probably is not the issue but we had a DK member whose dog was always scratching and irritated on the chin. It was finally found to be dog lice.   The groomer was the one who finally found the cause

Just a thought...when we had cats they would get pimples and blackheads on their chins that would turn into scabs. We were told by our vet that it was caused by their food/water bowls. We used the plastic or rubber kind. We changed to the ceramic or metal type and it went away. The vet did have to scrape and clean their chins but after that it never came back. What are the chances you are using plastic???

That was my thought as well.  We also had a cat that had the same problem with plastic bowls and he did fine once I started using ceramic bowls.

I'd also suggest that you join the Food Group.   There's lots of information including our recommended food list.  As you'll see from prior discussions Royal Canin is not a good food for lots of reasons.  I hope you're able to get to the bottom of this.

Thanks everyone. Ill join the groups suggested.
And thanks for some of the suggestions. We only use metal dishes. Well aware of the problems with plastic.
Funny thing is the scabbing doesnt itch her! It just appears and we can tell its come back because her mouth area starts
to smell and she wont let us get too close to it. Vet also said her ears and paws were in perfect condition.
