I just noticed this morning that Lucy is missing fur between two of her toes. It is obviously irritated and she keeps biting at it. I put a sock on it so she would quit licking it. I feel so bad because we just got back from the vet for a rash on her belly and we didn't notice it then.
I'd be upset that the vet didn't notice it. That's a symptom of seasonal allergies, and if so, she's biting and licking it because it's itching intensely. It sounds like there is already a moist dermatitis (hot spots) there and the next step would be infection if it isn't treated.
It's possible, since it is only one paw, that it's something like poison oak or poison ivy, but in any case, the itching and the subsequent hair loss, dermatitis, and possible infection are the same.
It's a good idea to try to keep her from licking it, but that doesn't deal with the intense itching that's causing her to do it. What did the vet say was the cause of the rash, and what if any treatment was recommended?
I just got through with this with Ollie. The vet thinks it must have been a bug bite or something since for him it was only on one toe. They soaked his foot in epson salt and told me to do that one or two more times. She gave me cream to put on it and told me he had to wear the cone for a full week. Well...the cone doesn't always work to well for us, so I put on his shoe when he was in the crate. I know that for some this might not be a good idea b/c some dogs may try and eat the shoe. Ollie did not. When I was home I took the shoe off so air could get to it a little better and I just watched him closely and made sure he did not lick it.
Anyways, let us know how Lucy is doing :)
