My 5 month old doodle has developed a cough. She sounds like she;s trying to get something out of her throat and sometimes vomits a little when she coughs. She's had all her shots, but could she have contracted kennel cough?

Permalink Reply by Lucy & AnnaBelle's Mom on August 6, 2012 at 1:46pm Does sound like kennel cough which yes they can get even if they have had the shot. However, double check to make sure your vet gave the shot because at our vet it isn't one that is given unless you specifically ask.
Permalink Reply by Karen & Jackdoodle on August 6, 2012 at 1:52pm Bordatella vaccine is like flu vaccine; it doesn't completely immunize a dog (or person) against all strains of the virus. They can still get it.
I would call the vet.

Sounds like kennel cough but I'd have a vet look at her. Since there's no guarantee that the vaccination will stave off infection, I don't bother with it for Riley and Molly. I believe the usual treatment depends on the severity. Riley appeared to have kennel cough about 1 year ago. The vet checked him over and said since it appeared to be very mild, he said Riley seemed strong enough to fit it off. Just as we would with a cold. In some cases an anti-inflammatory is given to reduce the episodes of coughing and to make the dog feel more comfortable. Antibiotics are given for more severe cases, so really only a vet can determine what's going on with your doodle. Good luck and keep us informed.
Permalink Reply by Bonnie and Kona on August 6, 2012 at 3:39pm We were dog sitting a friend's dog and she got it at the park. We gave her Robitussin D a few times and she was fine in 24 hours. If this does not help call the vet. Some dogs get it badly and have to have antibiotics.
