Where Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Owners Connect!

my groomer lynn sent me this post from petfinder, i was disgusted by the description! i would love to call the buffalo humane society and let them know....that temperament is one of the reasons we all have chosen to get a doodle!!

yes there are those that do breed for profit...the backyard breeders and the puppy mills, but that is why under those horrible circumstances that these incredible doodles can recover in most cases with grace!

look how cute he is!

Eli is a 8-12 month old pup that needs a special home. He's one of the new designer "doodles" that are bred for profit instead of temperament. He needs an experienced owner who will work on socializing him and introducing him to new things. He's getting better every day, but was very fearful and growly when he came in. For this reason, we won't place him with small children (under 10,) or in a home where children visit often. He is about 40 lbs and was probably bred from a small poodle. He does like to cuddle and hang out with people he knows, and he's been friendly with other dogs

Sounds like doodle bashing to me! I will find the post respond to it.

The problem with these types of over generalized statements and nasty comments about the doodles is that it only fulfills the person/organizations need to vent and doesnt actually help the dog. There are a lot of people out there that would consider getting this dog but now, they are less incline to do it because they have to go in and face those people and explain that they would like one of those awful dogs.

I always find it amazing that shelter people do this. I have soooo many shelters that would be more than happy to trade 5 doodles for one pit bull mix any day. Their shelters are filled to the hilt with tough dogs that most families will shy away from... at least with a fluffy, blonde dog like this one, there is likely going to be several people willing to adopt this dog. Which I am sure just ticks the shelter off even more... that people want the cute fuffy dogs as the others sit there waiting....

Unfortunately these ignorant people have a voice (via petfinders) so ignorance breeds ignorance.

Hi, Amy. Let me play "Adina" for a moment here and try to explain what I think the shelter worker who posted this really meant to say.
I think he/she was referring to the huge numbers of "poo-mix" dogs which are being churned out by the puppy mills and BYB's. These are the doodles who are most likely to turn up in the humane society and county animal control shelters, since the people who purchase from reponsible breeders have other options if the need to rehome arises; they can return their dogs to the breeder, and they are also more likely to be informed enough to be aware of IDOG RRR.
Many dogs who are bred in puppy mills and sold in pet stores DO have temperament and fear issues....not through any fault of their own, but because of their circumstances. (MY Jackdoodle is a perfect example of this, and he WAS turned in to a shelter.) So the shelter workers see the ones who are most likely to have temperament issues. In addition, dogs in shelter situations are extremely stressed, and do not always display their best side. I think (and hope) that this person was referring to the ""doodles who are bred for profit" alone, i.e. the puppy mill/BYB dogs, and not all doodles in general. I agree that it was worded badly, as it does give the impression that ALL doodles have bad temperaments and are bred strictly for profit alone. The saddest part of this, as IDOGMa said, is that it may result in a reduced number of potential adopters who might otherwise have wanted to give Eli a good home.

Excellent Adina impersonation!

LOL to Karen :-)
I agree with all of the above. But honestly the first thing that comes to mind when I see these listings is:
how is that supposed to get this dog a home?

that was my point, is that it would reduce the number of people interested in this pup and many others that were worded badly, if i were to write a description for a pup it would be as wonderful and "honest" as possible! to try to get the pup the best home!

and that if i was not as educated as i am on doodles & rescue ( and i am nearly as educated in rescue as a lot of you, i only have gotten bits of information here and there from what you all have to say her on DK) and i was looking for a doodle in need of rescue that comment would turn me away! that is all i was saying when i posted this!

That was my thought..........not a very good sales pitch and it does sound awful:( He is adorable!!!!

no, i knew you were not bashing it, i didn't have time this morning to fully explain how i felt about what and how she wrote his description!

as said above that i know very little about rescue, my idea of rescue three months ago was go to the local shelter, pick out a pup and go home and hope for the best. since i have joined dk i have learned soooo much, that i had wanted to rescue, and was close...the pup was in little rock ak. that is a long way from pa. pre dk i had no clue that you could rescue out of state. or did i know that there were sooo many "rescue" groups, different than humane societies. and when looking on petfinder, i was going by description. i had to... i have izzy,a cat, a bunny and 3 children, of which one is a toddler, so i was depending on the description for a 1st impression.
the description of that poor pup would, as a parent TURNED ME AWAY FAST due to my first thought being, ( if i did not know the temperament of most doodles) that he must be a nippy aggressive poodle type! next dog please.

totally agree. I have noticed that all the pit bulls comments are they're sooo sweet as well, but later the dog attacks another at the dog park. Scary
