I am having Invisible Fence come give me a consultation this Saturday. I was curious how many of you have this...or don't...what your feelings are on the subject. I live on a corner house and I am just a nervous wreck anymore with the dogs, I would just feel so much better if I KNEW the dogs were safe.

Thanks, that helps, I was thinking of doing my entire yard also. Maybe not now?? I just live on a corner lot so I'm not sure how the zones would work?? I'll have to see. I have also had some people tell me to just buy one and install it (from Tractor Supply) but I don't know about that, curious if you ever checked that route??

Lori, I do not trust invisible fencing, it does not keep predators or other dogs out. and does not stop someone from scooping up your dog. And if the other neighbor hood dogs are running and having a good time, the excitemnt might be too much, and your dogs may run right through the "fencing". Then after the fun, they may not want to risk the shock to come back in, and just may stay out.

Some dogs do not stay inside of invisible fencing, they go through anyway.

strictly my opinion.

I know of a friend that had two dogs run through and never came back, however this was many years ago and they were very Large dogs that could withstand the shock. I thank you for all the input, it will help with the MANY questions I would have for the invisible fence person that comes for my consultation.

My sisters dogs learned that the shock will stop when they get far enough out.

Lori... I had my invisible fence installed 1 month ago yesterday. Kendall has always been a perfect dog off leash away from home but for some reason she would not stay in the yard at the house. She would taunt me by running all around the neighborhood as fast as she could making sure to run right by me over and over again. The only way I could get her back was to open the car door and let her think she got to go for a ride which is her favorite thing to do. Anyway, we moved into a new house last month and the home owners association puts alot of limits on regular fencing. I was very skeptical of the invisible fence but I didn't want to make all my new neighbors mad. We are 4 weeks in right now and Kendall is able to stay outside all day by herself. I put the fence all the way around the property including the woods and it's working out perfect. I have tested her with everything that would have made her take off in the past including other dogs, kids on bikes, joggers, and even her favorite toys. She will not cross over the fence for anything. She will run up to the point she knows is the limit and she will stop dead. She will sit and bark but that's it. I was nervous about the woods becasue the fence is not in a straight line like it is in the yard but I have had no problems there either. She has learned the limits of the woods as well. I will say that you have to stick to the training because that is what determines if the fence will be a success. When you get the fence installed they have a trainer come for a session and show you how to properly train the dog. The guy who came to see me said since Kendall is still young (almost 2) and pretty hyper I would need to work with her alot which I did. By the end of week 2 she was able to go out on her own. You do have to let them get zapped which is no fun but well worth it. Kendall had to only get zapped 3 times and thats all. One of those times was early on when I was letting her drag the leash still. She got so excited she ran right through the fence. She did her thing where she ran right by me through the fence 2 or 3 times. I was able to slow her down and she got the tail end of a zap. She is so fast she can run through before she gets zapped and thats why the training is so important. It's mostly all psychological for the dog. I have had great luck and love the fence. I know Kendall does to. I hope this helps.

This is EXACTLY what my Mocha is doing - taunting me!!! Oh and I get sooo mad a her. The dogs just love to be outside and I want them to be able to have some fun together w/out all the worry. I live in a new neighborhood and we do not have many neighbors...my dogs think they can roam and technically right now this is okay...but someday it will not when a house is built.

thank you, it would be so wonderful not to worry, I hope I can work this out!! :-)

Invisible Fence changed my life. Best thing since sliced bread.

I was skeptical at first, quite frankly. I wondered about whether shocking the dogs was humane, wondered whether the thing would even work. We got it installed, and it's terrific. We live on a lot surrounded by acreage that is wild, so I didn't want a physical fence. I wanted the lovely creatures to be able to wander through, but I didn't want the dogs to be able to run free.

The fence is digital so you can have different levels for each dog, if you have more than one. We have the setting for the terrier at low, since she's so little it doesn't take much to get her attention.

Casey, on the other hand..... His is set at medium to high. And it definitely gets his attention! The other day there were three rabbits sitting on the other side of the fence and all three of our dogs were on our side, staring longingly.

By the way, one day I was walking with the collars in my hand (long story) and walked through the fence. (Duh.) I jumped, but the shock really isn't all that bad - it's rather like the shock you get with a light socket. Gets your attention, but doesn't really hurt.

Do not have Invisible Fence, but have another type of the same fencing by the name of PetStop. It was considerably less expensive than Invisible Fence and it has been great for my dog. Have had it for 2 years and the only time he has gone over is when the battery in his collar was worn out. (so smart that he knows when it is not working). Anyway, it is great if you don't want to put up a fence, however, it does not keep other animals out (have had a few coyotes in the backyard), nor does it keep anyone from coming in your yard and taking your dog. He's so friendly he would probably go with anyone. However I do not leave him out there when I am not home, so no problem. The system I have gives a short beep from the collar when the dog gets close to the boundary, so he knows not to go any further. Sometimes I even forget to put his collar on and he still stays in the yard.

We had one and we loved it. Although ALL our neighbors fenced their yards, so this year we finished it off.........so we never trained Giada, but my older dog did excellent with it. I never had any problems, and she got to the point where we didn't even need to put on her collar ............she just would NOT pass it for anything!

I know what the others are saying about other animals, but my sister when she lived in CA. had a 5 foot brick barrier around her yard and the cyotees still got in!

I don't live with coyotes or anything dangerous....so I think I'm okay there. I'm more worried about cars and them running into the street, we live in a new development and since house sales are so low our street is also not growing...only one more house since ours in two years...so you know animals and kids get used to no traffic, but someday I know there will be.

We had invisible fencing for our previous dog, a german shorthair pointer. It was great for a while, then she figured she could put up with the "zap" to gain her freedom. We called the rep, he came out and set it up with a shorter warning, lasted a week, and then she was out again. The rep came back and tried a bigger zapper on her collar. A week later she was out again. It was actually comical to watch.....she would go into a running race starter position and fly through it. When I spoke to the rep, he said she was smart and figured out how it worked. He removed the system and gave us a total refund. I was impressed and I believed him when he said they were 95% effective. I know other people who have had it and it worked great.
