Anybody ever had their Doodle called a Mutt?

I was just at Petsmart and a lady was walking across the parking lot with a beautiful Golden Retriever. She stopped me and asked me some questions about my car, as she is thinking of getting one. She said she is a Breeder and was questioning whether a crate would fit in the back seat or not. She asked if I had a dog and when I told her I had 2 Golden Doodles, she rolled her eyes,turned up her nose and made an awful face. "Why would anyone ever consider paying that much money for a Mutt!! That's all they are ya know...mutts." And she went on and on about GD's and all kinds of negative things about them. She made me so mad, I think if she had not had the Golden Retriever standing there beside her, I probably would have run over her.

Nobody would ever call a shelter mutt "just a mutt" but because someone is actually making money (smartly so!) breeding mixes on purpose the purists get snobby. So far I've had none of that said to my face.... Even at our Kennel Club (pure breed club) meetings I smile and proudly tell everyone I have two labradoodles and a border collie. They've all met and love Rosco so they can't say anything to my face =) I've had some bad stuff said via email or in non-doodle discussion forums. But their arguments are ridiculous.

Yes my two are mutts...but a "mutt" is not a bad thing.

I think it's incredibly difficult for pure breed breeders to wrap their minds around the purposefully bred mixed breed dog. It's just an incredibly huge leap and paradigm shift. It doesn't make sense to them. And there are some concerns they have that are justified. But none of their arguments are very good or convincing.

When people ask me what Rosco or Thule is...I tend to go back and forth between "half lab-half poodle" and "labradoodle" -- depends on how well I know/trust the person =)

Somehow, if you say they are a Golden Retriever mix, that's okay, but when you say Golden Doodle, you either get, "What is a Golden Doodle?" or a strange look. All the dogs I've ever had in my whole life have been a mix of something. And they've all been (with the exception of one) wonderful dogs. And you're right, a mutt is NOT a bad thing! It just made me so mad the way she said it, like they were trash or something.

So we need to come up with something like that as a come back depending upon how rude the mutt-hater is ;-)

Well...not really. Being rude back doesn't help, but it feels good!

Permalink Reply by Ann Bankert on August 19, 2008 at 11:08am: Yes, I feel like running over a few people like that myself, lol for all their "elite" attitude, they forget that there are only about 5 original breeds in the world. Every other breed was man made. They are all "mutts" (I hate that word) Just because some of the breeds have several hundred years on us, should not give them any assumed priviledges. The AKC and the CKC reccognize these breeds so their owners feel above us. I just remind people where their breed started from, most of the "breeders" are worried, jealous, scared, whatever. I figure that is their problem.....and I tell them so. After five years of listening to this "stuff" I get pretty short fused. They just have to meet a "doodle" spend time with them and they will realize what a truly unique "breed" these dogs are.

it's their loss...

Permalink Reply by Ann Bankert on August 19, 2008 at 11:22am: P.S. I used to be one of those elitist , purebred dog breeders. I showed and bred Standard, and miniature poodles, then I met labradoodles, the rest is history. I do love and admire poodles, but now I breed labradoodles.....

Now she wants one. Her Breeder friends thinks she is crazy. ( well I am crazy) I think that is why she wants me to bring Jordan to Wisconsin, just so she can show her old friends how great Jordan is.

Too bad Stella, Morgan and Maddie weren't along, they could have taken care of her and her purebred Golden...

Right after the class, there was some kind of handling or dog showing class for people who were interested in showing their purebred dogs. So, when we walked out of the obedience classroom with our dogs, we had to run the gauntlet of purebred dogs with their owners. I was amused to see that the dogs leaving the obedience class (mostly mixed breeds) were much better behaved than the fancy showdogs, who were going nuts barking and pulling their owners around--their owners were pretty ineffective in getting them to behave. Of course, Penny and Rudy were the stars of the obedience class anyway. I was not so amused when one night, one of those very snobby purebred dog people (the type you had your run-in with) stopped us and made a whole series of negative remarks about Penny and Rudy--not believing what they were (pretty much called me a liar, in fact), critical of their appearance and grooming, etc. etc. She was so obnoxious that she embarrassed some of the other purebred dog owners who overheard her. It must be something about the culture. This woman was a self-appointed expert. I ran into the same type when I once showed my cats (turned out the cats hated the cat show, and although there were plenty of nice people there were also some of the obnoxious ones, so I decided cat shows were not for us).
